Shortly before the 2016 election I was exchanging emails with my friends, Larry and Duane, in which we were commiserating about the state of the world.

Duane ended one email with “ Stay sane, everyone...the Times They Are Deranging...to paraphrase.”

Larry responded, “watch out, because ol' Geo. has been known to write entire parodies from a single phrase...”

So, what could I do but write this one?

Come now my friends and admit things are bad
It was the worst election we’ve ever had
You could say the choices were terribly sad
But that just doesn’t start explainin’
How Hillary and Trump were driving me mad
And the times they are derangin’

Come brothers and sisters forgive my snark
For I’m not one of those rich oligarchs
Nor one of society’s patriarchs
And it may sound like I am complainin’
But I am just trying to leave my mark
And the times they are derangin’

Come weathermen we know you’re not lying
Melting ice leaves the polar bears dying
But in August there are hailstones flying
It’s obvious the climate is changin’
But still the science some are denying
And the times they are derangin’

Come you nature lovers dancing with mirth
But we see men raping our Mother Earth
As they drill and frack for all they are worth
Yet in spite of resources they’re takin’
Their psyches suffer a terrible dearth
And the times they are derangin’

Come all you farmers with seeds you would sow
And tend and nourish and help them to grow
Taking on the powers from Monsanto
And the rights to your future they’re claimin’
We’re standing with you we want you know
And the times they are derangin’

Come people who know the system is broke
And just doesn’t work for us common folk
Government has become such a bad joke
That the punch line’s not even worth sayin’
So we know that we are our only hope
And the times they are derangin’

So come now tribe it is time to gather
And work on the things that really matter
Doing it the way that we had rather
Let us build a new world for replacin’
The old paradigm that soon will shatter
‘Cause the times they are derangin’
